It doesn't take a detective to figure out what foods are good for you. If you take a really close look though, some foods may give you a clue about what part of your body they actually benefit.
Dr. Tanya Edwards, a wellness expert at Cleveland Clinic, points out that a tomato often resembles a heart, and tomatoes also happen to be heart healthy.
"When you cut open a tomato, it almost looks like the four chambers of the heart and there are many of the vital chemicals, the plant based chemicals in tomatoes," Edwards explained. "For instance, lycopene, which are highly antioxidant and have been shown to be potentially helpful for the functioning of the heart."
You may have also noticed that when you crack open a walnut, it resembles the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Walnuts even look wrinkled, like the surface of the brain. In fact, studies have linked eating walnuts to better memory and brain function. Edwards adds that walnuts are a good source of plant-based omega-3's and good for brain health overall.
She also says seeing is believing when you're slicing carrots.
"It looks like the eye and sure enough carrots are a rich source of beta-carotene which makes Vitamin A in your body and as we know, Vitamin A is very important in the normal functioning of the retina and for improvement in vision," said Edwards.
To promote good health overall, it's generally a good idea to have lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet regardless of what they look like.
