Former Dolphins FB survives 9 hours in ocean

Rob Konrad falls from fishing boat, swims 9 miles to shore

PALM BEACH, Fla. – Former Miami Dolphins fullback Rob Konrad survived a fall into the ocean off Palm Beach by swimming nine miles back to shore.

The U.S. Coast Guard said that Konrad was fishing alone Wednesday evening when he fell off his 36-foot boat.

Konrad, who played with the team from 1999-2004, remained in the Atlantic Ocean for at least nine hours as he swam about nine miles back to safety, making it to shore some time after 4 a.m.

The former second-round draft pick came ashore near a home at 1800 S. Ocean Blvd. in Palm Beach.

Konrad, 38, was taken to an area hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

A Coast Guard spokesman said the boat was last seen headed in the direction of the Bahamas. It hasn't been recovered.

In his six seasons with the Dolphins, Konrad rushed for 114 yards and one touchdown. He also caught 111 passes for 854 yards and six touchdowns.
