Freebird Live sells-out last Saturday show

Venue will close doors permanently Wednesday

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – It was a sold-out show Saturday night at Freebird Live as the concert venue prepares to close its doors Wednesday.

A packed house at Freebird is nothing out of the ordinary, but for the crowd it was more than just another concert. It was the last weekend they would witness a concert at one of Jax Beach's most popular venues.

"It started with legends," Brian Roy, who frequents Freebird, said. "I've seen Johnny Winter to the Expendables to local acts at this place. They bring in the heart and soul of music and it just represents what a music venue should be."

Roy said he's been to many concerts at Freebird and has even played on stage. He said he will miss having conversations on the balcony and the charm of the bar.

"I'm glad it's sold out," Roy said. "Everyone's going to represent Jacksonville Beach for what it is, and there might be a tear of joy or something just bringing back memories, but it's going to be a blast."

News4JAX has confirmed the space will be turned into "Surfer The Bar." It will be owned by the same group that operates Salt Life Food Shack.

"I'm kind of bummed about it," Tashi Daniels, who frequents the area, said. "It's probably one of the best live music spots in Jacksonville ... I don't think Jacksonville has anything else like this."

After Saturday night's show there are only two shows left. Danka with Ecto will play Sunday, and Galactic will play the venues final show on Wednesday.
