FSU quarterback De'Andre Johnson charged with battery

Police say Johnson punched woman in face at bar

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State early enrollee quarterback De'Andre Johnson has been charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly hitting a female FSU student at a Tallahassee bar last week, according to ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach, who spoke with the state attorney's office.

Assistant State Attorney Georgia Cappleman confirmed the charge in an email to The Associated Press Tuesday.

The state attorney's office in Tallahassee issued a warrant for Johnson, who is accused of punching a 21-year-old woman in a bar on June 24.

Prosecutors told ESPN that video of incident was captured on a security camera at the establishment.

Officials said that Johnson was involved in an argument with the woman after she cut in front of him while they were waiting to order drinks at a bar near the FSU campus. Witnesses told police the woman raised her arms and then Johnson grabbed them and punched her in the face.

The quarterback was suspended indefinitely Thursday by Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher for a violation of athletics department policy.

A Jacksonville native, Johnson was the state's Mr. Football in 2014 and enrolled early at FSU in January. He completed 8 of 11 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns in FSU's spring game in April.

Johnson led Jacksonville's First Coast High School to a 12-1 season last year and the Class 8A regional final. Johnson was a four-year starter who finished with 11,697 career passing yards, 131 career touchdown passes, 23 career rushing touchdowns.

Johnson had committed to Florida State in 2012 and never wavered, despite offers from Auburn, Clemson, Ohio State and Tennessee, among others. He enrolled early at FSU, where he played in the Seminoles' spring game.
