GAINESVILLE, Fla. -

A Gainesville police officer is being credited for helping to save an 18-month-old girl who was having difficulty breathing.

Officer Alicia Davis says she was working another call Wednesday when she heard dispatchers sending another officer to the scene of a toddler in distress. Davis was closer, so she headed there.

The Gainesville Sun reports the toddler was unconscious and not breathing well when David arrived. Davis, who has a 10-month-old child, tilted the girl's head back and pulled her chin forward to open her airway. As she started CPR, the child began labored breathing.

Police spokesman Ben Tobias says Davis will be nominated for a Gainesville Police Department award for her quick thinking.

Tobias says the child was taken to a hospital and is expected to be fine.
