Gas prices dip below $3 in some areas

Drivers wait as Arlington Expressway gas station gets restocked

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Drivers may start to notice gas prices falling below $3 a gallon in Florida. It comes after a 10-cent drop in the average cost from $3.34 per gallon last month to $3.24.

Despite the current average, AAA spokesman Bill Bishop said it won't be uncommon to see gas at $3 a gallon in some places.

"The supply and demand is really off-kilter," Bishop said. "We're not driving as much as we were, and the production and supply is much greater. That puts downward pressure."

A Mobile gas station off Arlington Expressway near Regency Square Mall had the cheapest gas in town Monday at $2.97. But there was one problem.

"They were all out of gas, all out of regular," a customer named Patrick said.

He headed off to find gas somewhere else, while others found it worth their time to wait while the gas station got restocked.

"I feel lucky I got here now rather than earlier," customer Edward Aretz said. "So I'll save $2 on a tank of gas. Is it worth spending 15 minutes? No. Is it worth five minutes? Yeah."

Many customers here are excited to see the $2.97 along Arlington Expressway, but some may not know that some of those cheaper prices are cash only.

Other customers, like Courtnee Bull who gets her fuel from Mobil Gas, say finding places with cheap gas isn't the only key -- it's also knowing how far you can stretch that tank of gas.

"Work and home and work and home. Always keep your regular maintenance up on the car but just work and home and try not to go too many places," said Bull. "That's it for me."

Shell gas is sharing ways consumers can get the best gas mileage as well.

  • Drive smoothly and avoid heavy acceleration
  • Minimize vehicle drag by keeping heavy items in trunk
  • Use cruise control on major roads and in free-flowing traffic
  • Avoid speeds over 60 miles-per-hour

AAA estimates gas prices will continue to fall well into the holiday season, which will be a big help for those planning to travel.

AAA said gas prices are also falling in Georgia, with an average cost of $3.19 per gallon. It launched a new tool called the Fuel Price Finder this week that will make it easier for drivers to find the cheapest gas prices in their area. The website is www.AAA.com/gas.
