George Zimmerman's gun wraps up first day at auction

The gun George Zimmerman used to kill Trayvon Martin is wrapping up its first day at auction. It's listed right now on unitedgungroup.com apparently posted by Zimmerman.

Gun Broker originally had the gun listed for auction, but rejected the listing last night saying in a statement it didn't want any part of the publicity it was receiving. United Gun Group began the auction this morning and already has more than 1,000 bids.

The starting price was $5,000, but Zimmerman's account was apparently hijacked by fake accounts posting astronomically high bids, surpassing $65 million. In the description, believed to be written by George Zimmerman, the gun is described as an "American Firearm Icon" and that has some people outraged.

"If you look at it from Tracy and Sabrina's perspective, it's like he is shooting and killing Trayvon all over again four years later with this attempt to auction off this gun like it's some kind of trophy," said Benjamin Crump, Martin family attorney. "It's offensive, it's outrageous and it's insulting,"

Crump thinks the public should be outraged over this posting.

On the gun's auction page, Zimmerman writes that the gun used to kill Trayvon Martin in self-defense was recently returned to him by the Department of Justice and still has the case number written on it.

News4Jax attempted to contact the state's attorney's office, but has not received a comment.

Some of the bidders on the gun are Shaniqua Bonifa, an African-American comedian, and Tamir Rice. Rice was a 12-year-old boy shot an killed in Ohio by officers who believed Rice had a real gun. Investigators later determined it was an airsoft replica.

There are still more than four days left in the auction. The current bid of over $65 million is held by someone named Craig Bryant. News4Jax tried to contact the United Gun Group to see if these bids were legitimate, but hasn't heard back.
