3 unsolved killings rock Coffee County
2 young women found in pond Saturday; man shot to death in Douglas
Tosha Stiles and Angela Ortega
After three unsolved slayings in Coffee County between Saturday and Tuesday, residents are worried.
The bodies of 20-year-old Tasha Stiles and 23-year-old Angela Ortega were found about 3 p.m. Saturday by three boys walking by the pond on Rexford Batten Road. Investigators have drained the pond to look for evidence. Ortega's car was found burned early Saturday morning.
Family members said the two mothers left Friday evening for a girls night out and never returned.
Marcus Collins, 38, was found shot several times in the parking lot of a city community center. Detectives think he was shot in a nearby neighborhood and ended up near Roundtree Park.
Douglas Police Chief Gary Casteloes said that six officers from his department have been assigned to devote their off-duty time to assisting lead detective Robert Sprinkle in the investigation of Collins' death.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has not said how the women were killed, but they do believe their bodies were not in the pond very long.
Many residents in the area people in the area say they're afraid because while the community isn't immune to violent crime -- there are about three to four killings a year -- that many in just days is very rare.
Douglas is a sleepy town of about 11,000 people. The county is home to only about 45,000 residents. It's a place where most people don't even lock their doors. But now things are different.
"Out in the country we don't pay attention to it, but now we're making sure everyone's got a locked door, started making sure everything's locked up," said resident John Royals.
Royals lives right up the road from the pond where the women's bodies were found.
"I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty scared," he said. "I mean, it's not that far from home. It kind of hits close. It does kind of shake you up a little bit."
Detectives can't tell yet if the crimes are related.
"We're doing everything we can -- the sheriff, the special agent in charge of the GBI, and the chief of police are all very worried about this. They're devoting all the resources they can to make sure these are solved," District Attorney Rick Currie said. "There's no indication that this is the type of crime that's going to affect the general public. It's not like we've got a serial killer out there."
Anyone with information on either case is asked to call the GBI's Douglas office at 912-389-4103, the Douglas police at 912-260-3605 or the TIPS line at 912-260-3600. Callers can remain anonymous.
