Officials in Brunswick are planning to return a 163-year-old bell to its home at Queens Square.
The Brunswick News reports that the large pre-Civil War bell escaped being melted down for artillery for the Confederacy. It once hung in an early Brunswick farmers market.
Now, the bell will join an iron stew pot in separate displays in downtown Brunswick. Both artifacts are being moved from the now closed visitors welcome center at U.S. 17 and the F.J. Torras Causeway and being turned over to the city by the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce.
Mathew Hill, executive director of the Downtown Development Authority, said displaying the bell is part of a plan to showcase Brunswick's history.
