BRUNSWICK, Ga. -

A man who left Jacksonville before dawn Monday on a trip north was found dead of an apparent gunshot just off Interstate 95, according to the Glynn County coroner Monday afternoon.

Glynn County police say Richard Hollis, 49, was found dead about 7 a.m. after police received a 911 call about man in distress next to a Toyota Camry just east of the I-95-Georgia Highway 99 interchange. The car was jacked up and a spare tire was next to the car, leading police to believe Hollis had pulled off the road because he had a flat tire.

Witnesses reported that the victim was walking around his vehicle about 5:30 a.m. Shortly after, another witness reported seeing a small, red or maroon car leaving the area toward I-95.

The body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Savannah for an autopsy and the car was impounded at the Police Department as evidence in a homicide investigation.

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said Hollis left his Jacksonville home about 4 a.m. on a trip to North Carolina to visit a family member.

Doering would not speculate on a motive for killing Hollis, although police did say his wallet was missing.

Hollis had recently retired as a senior manager with Hickory Foods, the Jacksonville company that markets Bubba Burgers and other products.

The company did not want to talk about Hollis, wanting to give the family time to grieve, other than saying they have no idea why anyone would want to kill him.

Police say they were looking for witnesses and ask anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area early Monday morning to call Investigator Bill Tomlinson at 912-554-7802 or Silent Witness at 912-264-1333.
