Authorities near Georgia's coast have begun a homicide investigation after a body found half-buried in a wooded area north of Darien was identified.
The Brunswick News reports that the man was identified Thursday as 56-year-old Joseph Leon Speight of Crescent. The identification was made following an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab.
McIntosh County Sheriff Deputy Maj. Danny Lowe said the autopsy revealed that Speight had been shot.
Sheriff's deputies found Speight's partially decomposed body while searching the area.
He was found in a shallow grave in the woods off Sams Memorial Lane, near Smith Road in McIntosh County.
Police had been looking for Speight since Saturday, when he was reported missing.
