Brunswick names veteran officer chief of police

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – After months of searching for a new chief of police, Brunswick city commissioners voted 3-2 to promote from within.

"I am overwhelmed," Capt. Kevin Jones told The Brunswick News. "I am the same man I was when I became a police officer, not a politician, just a worker. I just want to do good for my city, this department, and to honor my badge."

The city manager had recommended Jones, who was serving as public information officer, but there were concerns because he lacked the the education requirements.

While Jones has enough college credits and job experience, he does not have the associate's degree specified in the advertisement for the job.

During the hiring process, some community members speculated that the city wanted to hire a black chief of police. Jones is white.
