Firefighters monitor hot spots in ruins of Brunswick port warehouses

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – More than 24 hours after two Brunswick warehouses were destroyed when they went up in flames, fire crews were keeping a close eye on hot spots. This comes after fire and smoke started up again just before 10 p.m. Saturday.

News4Jax brought you the story after crews were called to the Georgia Ports Authority just after 1 a.m.

Fire crews are still at the scene and said they will be until they are 100 percent sure the fire is out. There had been some reports that it was still smoldering.

It might be hard for some to believe just how quickly the buildings went up in fire and smoke and how little of the whole area is left. All that remains is what looks like large piles of sand.

"What we have is a large pile of wood pellets and with that type of fire, it has a tendency to get down inside. So essentially this is a large wood chip fire," said Brunswick Fire Marshal Rhett Fairfield.

Crews said wood chips had been housed inside of the buildings. Their goal Sunday was to make sure the water is able to soak deep into the rubble, where the wood chips are.

"Right now the largest help that we are getting is from the Savannah Fire Department," Fairfield said. "They've got an industrial fire pump that they brought down. It's actually submerged into the river and pulling the river water out."

For now, crews aren't saying how long it may take before the fire is fully out, but they said they're not leaving under the area is completely safe.

Fire officials said they don't expect the hot areas to spread.
