WASHINGTON, Ga. -

East Georgia City of Washington (about 100 miles east of Atlanta) has decided to dissolve its police department.  The decision came Thursday in a council meeting to quit funding for the department.

The Augusta Chronicle reports the city budget as the reason to dissolve the police department.  Council members have been going back and forth for weeks debating on what move to take.

According to Mayor Ames Barnett, the Wilkes County Sheriff's Department and Georgia State Patrol are taking over the areas the police department was responsible for.  Barnett says the Wilkes County Sheriff's Department is going to hire some of the employees.

The closing will be effective Friday.
