Officer loses control of patrol car in rain, seriously hurt

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A Glynn County  police officer was seriously injured Thursday evening in a traffic crash while responding to a report of shots fired, the department said.

Officers responded at 6:36 p.m. to a report of a person with a gun at Eagle Pointe Apartments on Crispen Boulevard. Police said dispatchers updated the call with a report of shots fired.

Officer Jacob Kapeller was responding north on Highway 341 in the rain. Police said Kapeller lost control of his patrol car near Wages Road, causing his patrol car to rotate clockwise and strike a Ford F-150 pickup and a black Toyota Camry. The driver's side of the patrol car struck the front of the Ford pickup.

Kapeller was taken to Southeast Georgia Health System and was then transferred to Savannah Memorial with serious injuries, according to the Glynn County Police Department.

Those inside of the Ford F-150 and Toyota Camry were also taken to Southeast Georgia Health Systems. Police said they were treated and released.

Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash. There was no word on the incident at the apartment complex.
