Rangers from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Ware County deputies used two boats to conduct an initial investigation.

Preliminary findings by law enforcement officers indicated the body is that of Johnny Mack Carter, of Jennings, Florida. Carter was reported missing on the Satilla River Jan. 3, deputies said.

At 4:20 p.m., authorities traveled to the area where Carter's body was found, which was close to where the missing man's boat had been recovered, the Sheriff's Office said.

"The recovery today brings to a tragic close a lengthy and exhaustive search effort for Mr. Carter," said Ware County Sheriff Randy F. Royal. "While this is a sad conclusion, it gives closure to the Carter family."

Deputies said the body was recovered and will be sent to the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah for positive identification and an autopsy.
