Police: Burglar sought after assaulting woman with hammer

ST. MARYS, Ga. – Police in St. Marys are looking for a would-be burglar they said assaulted a woman in her home with a hammer Thursday.

Police and other agencies were called to Sunnyside Court and began searching for the man. The search lasted several hours, but the man was not found.

The man is described as white, between 5 feet 7 and 5 feet 9 inches tall and between 120 and 130 pounds. He was said to be middle-aged, with shoulder-length dark blond/light brown unkempt hair, and a full beard. His hair was greasy or unclean.

The victim said he was wearing a dirty blue plaid long sleeve shirt, but she did not have a description of his pants or shoes.

Police said the attempted burglar had the appearance of a homeless person. They said it's possible he's been seen in the area riding a bicycle.
