Superintendent: Person approached children at school

ST. GEORGE, Ga. – Elementary school parents in Charlton County received a disturbing letter this week from the Charlton County superintendent.

Superintendent John D. Lairsey sent a letter home with St. George Elementary School students on Tuesday saying that on Monday someone in a vehicle had approached the playground and attempted to talk to some students.

The incident was reported to the Charlton County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating and has identified a person of interest, Lairsey said.

Lairsey's letter said the students were behind a locked fenced area and a school employee intervened during the incident.

"Student safety is of utmost concern to the school system, and we are fully cooperating with the Sheriff's Office during the investigation," Lairsey said in the letter. "We are confident the students and staff at St. George Elementary School are safe."
