Woman sentenced for embezzling over $400K from employer

WAYCROSS, Ga. – A 46-year-old Hoboken woman was sentenced last week to four years and nine months in prison after earlier pleading guilty to embezzling more than $400,000 from her employer.

According to evidence presented at the guilty plea and sentencing hearings, Angela Griffis was employed as the office manager of a pediatric medical practice group in Waycross. Over the course of nearly six years, Griffis schemed to embezzle from her employer by preparing fraudulent checks and electronic transfers for her own benefit.

To cover up the scheme, Griffis made fraudulent entries in her employer's accounting records to make it appear as if the fraudulent expenses were legitimate when, in fact, they were not. The stolen money was used to finance Griffis's lavish lifestyle, including paying for numerous vacations, shopping sprees and other personal expenses.

As part of the sentence, Griffis was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $406,545.26 to the victims.
