2 charged in armed robbery in St. Marys

Seat belt traffic stop leads to capture of 2 suspects, police say

ST. MARYS, Ga. – Two men were arrested in connection with an armed robbery Wednesday in St. Marys after a joint effort between the St. Marys Police Department and the Camden County Sheriff's Office, police said.

According to St. Marys police, the Green Cedar Food Store on Dilworth Street was robbed at gunpoint just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The robbers ran away with several hundred dollars in cash before officers arrived, police said.

As deputies from the Camden County Sheriff's Office and St. Marys officers responded to the armed robbery and took a description of the two robbers, a Camden County deputy conducted a traffic stop on Georgia Highway 40 near Miller Street for a seat belt violation.

The deputy said he smelled marijuana in the vehicle and told all four men inside to get out.

During the stop, the deputy saw a wad of money on the floor in the back of the vehicle, and none of the men claimed it, police said.

The deputy found more money under the driver's seat.

The total amount of money found in the car was similar to what had been stolen from the store, police said.

After further investigation, two of the men in the car -- Elijah Gary Oats, 19, and Tyler Rashard Lowe, 22 -- were charged with armed robbery from the Green Cedar incident, police said.

“The support and assistance of the Camden County Sheriff’s Office was invaluable and directly resulted in apprehending two suspects,” St. Marys Chief of Police Timothy P. Hatch said in a news released. “Cooperative efforts such as this indicate the high commitment that law enforcement officers throughout Camden County have to serving our community to the fullest.”
