ATLANTA (AP) - Government monitors question whether Southern Co. can keep its already-delayed schedule to build a new nuclear plant in Georgia.
Delays could raise the cost of building two new reactors at Plant Vogtle, southeast of Augusta. It's one of the first brand-new nuclear plants built in the United States in a generation.

Utility customers generally pay for those construction costs. Regulators say finishing the plant remains the best financial option.
Nuclear engineer William Jacobs Jr. and Public Service Commission analyst Steven Roetger said in their report released Monday that the construction and engineering firms have a poor track record of meeting deadlines. They question whether lost time can be made up.
Financial analyst Philip Hayet says each day of a delay could add $2 million in costs.
