Forecasters extend winter weather advisory for north Georgia

ATLANTA – Forecasters are extending a winter weather advisory for much of north Georgia over concerns about black ice forming on roads as light snow showers continued in the region.

The National Weather Service said the advisory would be in place until 7 p.m. Wednesday. It covers several counties and includes the cities of Blairsville, Dalton, Ringgold, Rome, Dahlonega and Woodstock.

Forecasters had said that up to 2 inches of snow could fall across a large part of the north Georgia mountains. Though some snow was still falling early Wednesday, the weather service said little if any additional snowfall accumulation is expected during the day Wednesday.

Some schools in the north Georgia mountains were closed early as snow fell in the region. The Rome News-Tribune reports that Rome's city schools and Floyd County Schools were closing earlier than normal Tuesday afternoon. The Daily Citizen of Dalton reports that Whitfield County Schools also planned to dismiss students early Tuesday.
