Girl, 2, dies after cardiac arrest

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The 2-year-old girl who was taken to Wolfson Children's Hospital on Saturday morning after she stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest has died, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Around 9:25 a.m. Saturday, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to the Villages of Baymeadows apartments, which is not far from Interstate 95.

They received a call in reference to a 2-year-old girl in full cardiac arrest.  The child was given CPR and transported to Baptist South in critical condition.  She was then transferred to Wolfson Children's Hospital in critical condition. On Sunday night, JSO told Channel 4 the girl passed away.

"At this point in time we're conducting this case as potential foul play. Any time we have a 2-year-old that stops breathing on their own, there are obviously some concerns," said Sgt. Jay Farhat with JSO.

JSO investigators were talking to the child's mother and the mother's boyfriend. Farhat said he believes they are cooperating with the investigation.

"There is no visible sign of trauma that we can tell, however, 2-year-olds don't just stop breathing, so we need to have our due diligence and make sure nothing happened to this child that shouldn't have happened," said Farhat.

Investigators were still looking into who called 911 and said the child had no history of medical conditions.

"She's not doing well. It's our responsibility as law enforcement and parents to ensure the safety of our children, and that's what we're doing now," said Farhat.
