Girl, 8, hit by car now in good condition

Siblings struck while walking to bus stop Tuesday morning

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An 8-year-old girl hit by a car Tuesday while walking with her brother to their bus stop is now in good condition.

The accident happened on Seaboard Avenue near Penny Lane. Nine-year-old Antuan Taveras was expected to be OK, while 8-year-old Amya Taveras was initially in critical condition.

On Thursday, she was said to be in good condition.

The kids have crossed the street hundreds of times on the way to their bus stop before Tuesday's crash, family friend Steve Underwood said.

"The kids went to go out to the bus stop," Underwood said. "Their mother was inside with the other kids. They heard a loud crash. She ran to the door to see what was going on. He says she was woken up by her screaming and he immediately ran outside, and that's when they saw the kids on the ground and the car stopped down the road."

Underwood said when he heard what happened, the first thing he thought was, "How quick can we get there? Is there anything we can do to help?"

Underwood said the family is worried they won't be able to afford their children's medical bills, and they hope the community can come together for them in their time of need.

"Everything seems like it's tough, and you have your struggles, but you're getting by and then something like this happens, and there's no way to recuperate," Underwood said.

The family has set up a Wells Fargo account for donations to help with the children's medical bills. The account number is 8087058312.
