Grandfather shares picture of hit-and-run victim.

3-year-old killed Tuesday night in hit-and-run

SAN MATEO, Fla. – A Putnam County man is praying the person who hit and killed his 3-year-old grandson on U.S. Highway 17 on Tuesday night will come forward.

The grandfather of Morgan Calway said it was within seconds when they realized the unimaginable happened.

The child got out of the house and made it to the busy road, where he was hit by a car. The driver of that car didn't stop and still hasn't been caught.

Morgan's grandfather is the pastor of the San Mateo Church of the Nazarene. His home is behind the church, and that's where family lost track of the child for just a few seconds, then realized he was gone.

Morgan's grandfather said the boy was just learning how to open doors and must have learned how to open the deadlock, because he got out of the house and was able to get about 100 yards away, then onto the road, where he was hit and killed.

His grandfather said he really wishes the driver would have stopped. He said he wouldn't have even been mad. He would have thanked that person for doing what they could to save his grandson.

As hard as it is to lose his only grandchild, he said at least Morgan was happy in the minutes leading up to his death. He said he loved running and being outdoors, and he said getting out of the house was probably an adventure to Morgan.

Now his hope is to find who's responsible. The Florida Highway Patrol said it has the car that hit Morgan, and is just trying to identify the driver.

Investigators are currently interviewing three people and hope to soon learn exactly what happened that tragic night.
