Habitual offender convicted of firing shot at gas station clerk

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 30-year-old was convicted this week of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon for a June 2014 incident when he vandalized a Northwest Jacksonville gas station and fired a shot at the clerk.

Prosecutors said Maurice Eugene Sanders became angry with the clerk of a store on Soutel Drive and vandalized the store. When the clerk followed him outside, Sanders pulled a gun and fired one shot at him. The victim was not hit by the gunfire. Sanders then got into a car and left the scene.

Sanders faces up to 30 years in prison as a habitual felony offender. He will be sentenced the week of Sept. 12.
