How to select the right sunglasses

Doctor: Buy glasses with UVA and UVB block

Sunglasses are the best way to protect your eyes from the sun's most damaging rays, but not all sunglasses offer the same protection.

Experts say when choosing sunglasses, start with the lenses.

"The best way to do it is to buy sunglasses that are UVA and UVB blocking sunglass. There are a bunch out there. You want to buy them from a reputable manufacturer," said Dr. Rishi Singh, an ophthalmologist with Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Singh says children as young as 6-months-old should wear sunglasses. The Vision Council of America reminds us the damage from UVA and UVB radiation is cumulative over a person's lifetime so it's a good idea to teach your children the importance of wearing sunglasses.

Over-exposure to the sun's rays can cause the formation of several eye diseases, including cataracts and macular degeneration.

Dr. Singh says the color of the lens doesn't matter much, but brown or amber colored lenses sometimes produce more contrast for some people.  He says before you buy, you should look for a sticker on the lens. It will explain what type of protection the sunglasses offer.

"It'll say what level of UVA and UVB protection you would have on the sticker on the sunglasses. More importantly, you want to sit with a manufacturer you would trust," said Dr. Singh.
