Human bones found in Nassau County

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – Four days after human bones were found on a remote island near the Florida-Georgia border, Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leaper said it will be a couple more days before the medical examiner can tell them something about who the person was.

Deputies received a call at 11 a.m. Sunday from a person who found what was described as a skeleton while walking around Tiger Island. The Sheriff's Office responded and confirmed that the bones were human and sent them to the medical examiner's office.

The bones were sitting in the mud on Tiger Island and had been there for a while. No other evidence was found nearby.

Leeper said the medical examiner can confirm the sex and perhaps some other information from the bones.
