Human remains were found Saturday in the woods near the intersection of Huron Street and West 12th Street in Edgewood, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

A company was working on a gas leak near railroad tracks and the woods when officials said the remains were found.

When detectives arrived to the scene, they confirmed the remains were of a human.

Sgt. Jay Farhat didn't have an exact time on how long the remains appeared to have been in this area, but said they could have been there for quite some time.

Farhat said a homeless camp is located in the woods not far from where the remains were found, so he said if the remains are identified as a homeless person, it wouldn't be a surprise.

Farhat said detectives will investigate until the sun goes down Saturday and police will secure the scene overnight, then the homicide team will resume their investigation at sunrise Sunday.
