"I have a friend who's very much into it and she looks fabulous." says Barrios.

But she was eager to find out if she could get similar results just by popping a pill.

"I think that this is the most natural way to go," says Barrios.

It was recommended by her dermatologist as the latest anti-aging product to hit the market.  It's powered by something called Phytoceramides.

"Phytoceramides are plant derived ceramides which basically mean fatty acids, just like the ones that make the outer layer of the skin," says Dr. Leyda Bowes

Miami dermatologist Dr. Leyda Bowes says our bodies also make ceramides that cover the outer layer of your skin. They prevent water loss keeping your skin hydrated and smooth.

"As we age, we make less and less of the ceramides so when you take the supplement you're really creating a new supply of this skin barrier that keeps it moisturized," says Bowes

While phytoceramide supplements can't replace plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures.  Dr. Bowes says they can support your skin health.

"I see it as a good head start. I definitely will continue to use them," says Barrios

Studies in Japan have shown the Phytoceramide  supplements have been shown to be safe and well tolerated.  The supplements are made from either wheat or rice so read labels carefully if you have dietary restrictions.
