Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival supports charity

48 teams compete in annual event

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Dragon boat racing participants knew that were raising money for charity when they came out on Saturday morning.  The race took place on the St. Johns River.

"We have had so much fun, they have so much energy. There is nothing like the spirit of breast cancer survivors coming together to support one another on a team. We get to show our stuff on the water and we are so excited," said Angela Long.

Long's team is from Sarasota, one of many out of town teams taking part in the Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival.   In total, 48 teams, including many from Jacksonville were racing against one another.

"We always do charity work every month, but this is our biggest event.
It is cool to see 48 groups of 20 people come together as one and do something so synchronized," said Justin Hoffman.

While knowing it's for charity, the team want to put up the best times they can and finish their race in first place.

"It's crazy. It was about five minutes ago, and I'm still exhausted," said Hoffman.

"We say that we are sisters on the shore, but we are competitors on the water. We support each other, but when we get out there, we want to win," said Long.
