Jacksonville man gets life sentence in girlfriend's 2015 murder

Calvin Andrews shot LaBreka Evans in stomach during argument

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville man was sentenced to life in prison Thursday afternoon for the 2015 murder of his girlfriend, LaBreka Evans.

Calvin Tyrone Andrews Jr., 38, is charged with killing Evans during an argument at their home on Woodland Street. The couple lived at the home with their child.

During the argument, Andrews shot Evans in the stomach. He drove her to the hospital, but she died two days later.

Andrews was found guilty of second-degree murder in March.

Andrews was originally charged with aggravated battery for the shooting, but the charges were upgraded to murder after Evans died at UF Health, JSO Assistant Chief Chris Butler said after the incident.

Butler said the couple had been together nine years and had a 6-year-old child together. Evans also had another 10-year-old child. Both children were home but outside when Andrews shot Evans in the torso during the argument, Butler said.

Butler said the couple had been fighting for days over changes they made to party plans.

"That argument led to pushing and shoving. The suspect in this case retrieved a hand gun and shot the victim one time," Butler said. "The suspect then placed her in a vehicle and transported her to a hospital."

According to the police report, neighbors heard arguing and then a loud bang and saw Andrews helping Evans into a car. One neighbor told police that Andrews said Evans had shot herself but that Evans said to the neighbor, "Help me. Don't let him take me" and "This n***** tried to kill me."

Butler said Andrews made admissions of guilt and officers were able to recover the murder weapon.

Butler said the couple had two documented incidents of previous domestic issues: one in 2008 and one in 2012. According to the reports, those incidents involved pushing and shoving, Butler said.

Butler said Andrews has a criminal history that includes resisting arrest, battery on a law enforcement officer, check fraud and careless driving.
