Jacksonville Maritime Heritage museum to close

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Maritime Heritage Society's museum at The Jacksonville Landing will close at the end of the year, after 28 years.

The Board of Trustees can no longer find funding to run the museum, officials said. The board voted unanimously Aug. 13 to close the museum as of Dec. 31.

"This decision was a very reluctant one that came after more than a year of examining many different avenues in order to keep the museum in operation," officials posted in a statement on the museum website. "As things stand, existing funds will enable JMMS to keep the current operation going only through the end of 2015."

Officials were hoping to stay afloat until the opening of the USS Adams Museum and move there, but that project won't be finished fast enough.

The artifacts at the museum will be returned to donors or given to other facilities. What's left will be auctioned off in December.
