JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The man accused of killing a former firefighter at Jacksonville Beach in February was arraigned Monday on a first-degree murder indictment.

Charles Pearce, 30, entered a not guilty plea in the shooting death of 42-year-old Mike McCue, who was shot in the driveway of his home.

Pearce's next pretrial hearing is scheduled for June 6. He's being held at the Duval County Jail without bail.

Pearce was arrested in Arizona more than a week after the killing. He did not fight extradition, and was brought back to Duval County in March.

After a Duval County grand jury reviewed the case, it handed up an indictment charging Pearce with first-degree murder.

Pearce is also charged with attempted murder in connection with a separate shooting about a block away from where McCue was killed. Police said Pearce initially fired a shot at his stepfather, but missed him.

Not long after, McCue was shot and killed outside his home, one block away.
