JFRD investigates two Westside fires

Both fires reported within minutes of each other

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department is investigating two fires that damaged two Westside homes Wednesday morning.

At 4:48 a.m. JFRD was dispatched to a home on 5114 Highway Ave. in reference to a fire.

According to JFRD, a man was living in the house without power, using a kerosene lantern for light. Somehow, the lamp caused a fire.

The man and his dog were able to escape the fire unharmed.

When firefighters arrived, the entire front porch was on fire and had spread through the entire home.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the fire under control.

The Red Cross is assisting the man.

Before the fire on Highway Avenue, firefighters were already working to extinguish another fire on 103rd Street and Moret Drive.

The home on 103rd Street was heavily damaged.

There was no word if anyone was inside that home at the time of the fire. The cause is being investigated.
