Home invasion suspects crash in Ortega Farms

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a home invasion robbery led to a police pursuit and ended with three suspects crashing in a front yard in Ortega Farms early Friday morning.

About 3 a.m., three male suspects forced their way into a home on Hurdia Road, just south of Morse Avenue on the Westside and pistol-whipped at least one person inside, according to Asst. Chief Chris Butler, of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

"The police officers saw the vehicle around 118th Street and Blanding Boulevard and the officers attempted to stop the vehicle with a traffic stop," Butler said. "That vehicle fled, which resulted in a brief pursuit."

Three JSO officers were involved in the pursuit.

"When the suspect vehicle was traveling northbound on Seaboard Avenue, that vehicle lost control and crashed into a residential home," Butler said.

Butler estimated the speed reached 70 mph off Seaboard Avenue. The suspects hit a 4-foot pole in a yard and turned on its side.

"There were three that were inside the vehicle, all three were transported to UF Health (Jacksonville)," Butler said. "I know I have one in life-threatening condition. I don't have any status reports on the other two."

No shots were fired in this incident and no officers were hurt.

The homeowner, who didn't want to be identified, said her sons and some others, including children, were in the home when the break-in happened.

JSO investigators recovered a handgun from the suspects' vehicle, according to Butler.

There was no word on the condition of the person or people pistol-whipped in the home invasion robbery.
