JSO: Man bitten by dog before Jacksonville City Council meeting

Man accidentally stepped on adoptable dog before bite, JSO says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 63-year-old man was injured when a dog bit him before Tuesday night's meeting of the Jacksonville City Council, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

According to the incident report, there were a number of people and two dogs at City Hall for an adoption event, and Boree Henderson accidentally stepped on one of the dogs, named Elvis, when he moved down the main aisle to greet someone.

Elvis bit him on the leg, and Henderson became tangled in the leash and fell to the floor. He was treated by firefighters for the bite.

The dogs were from Animal Care and Protective Services.

Henderson was at the council meeting because his grandchildren were acting as council "helpers."

City officials said Elvis has been placed in quarantine, following the ACPS guidelines. He will remain there for 10 days and then be evaluated by ACPS behavior coordinators and leadership to determine if he will be made available for adoption again.

"For the past two months, ACPS has featured pets during the City Council meetings to highlight its services and promote pet adoptions," city spokeswoman Marsha Oliver said in a prepared statement. "This is an isolated but very unfortunate incident that our ACPS office is reviewing carefully. “
