JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Homicide investigators say a 25-year-old Hispanic man was found dead in the middle of the road Saturday morning near the intersection of North Kernan Boulevard and Ashley Melisse Boulevard.
Officers said they were originally called to what they thought was a hit-and-run investigation, but detectives said the death was not a result of a vehicle.
"I just think they happened to be coming down Ashley Melisse for whatever the reason whatever their destination was," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Dan Janson. "The incident took place on the roadway, I don't think it had anything to do with the surrounding neighborhoods."
Police said there is only one victim at this time, identified by JSO as 25-year-old Jose Enrique Pabon-Caballero.
Police said foul play is suspected and the medical examiner was called to the scene. There is an ongoing search for a suspect.
Police were originally looking for a two-door Honda Civic that they have since recovered. Sunday night, investigators released photos of a black SUV they said they now consider a suspect vehicle.
Investigators said that even though they don't yet have a suspect in custody, they don't believe there is any threat to people who live in the neighborhood.
