Robbery unit investigating incident on Spring Glen Road

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man is hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds after a shooting inside a home on Spring Glen Road, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Sgt. Chuck Ford with JSO's robbery unit said police were called to the home in the 3400 area of Spring Glen Road about 12:43 p.m. Wednesday because of a disturbance.

When officers arrived they found a man shot inside the home. The man was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, but his condition has since been upgraded to critical, Ford said. The victim, whose name has not been released, was in surgery Wednesday afternoon.

News4Jax was told that the man was shot more than a dozen times.

Ford said two occupants were inside the home and the man entered the home and was shot after an altercation. It's unclear if the victim had a weapon or if the occupants knew the victim, Ford said.

The homeowner's brother told News4Jax the man was attempting to rob his brother and his brother's wife: George and Jessica Porter.

"They go to church. They're church people, and I don't know who would do this -- to try and rob them," Bentley Roy Porter said.

News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said if it was a home invasion or robbery, the people inside have a right to defend themselves.

"Right now we don't know if it was a home invasion or some type of robbery. Of course, they'll investigate and try to figure that out," Smith said. "If it is a case where someone was trying to come into the home burglarize the home or try to rob them then the person inside the home has a right to defend themselves and defend their property. That also includes using deadly force."

Ford said the man shot was the only one taken to the hospital and it did not appear the home's occupants were injured.

"We're going to take our time and we're going to work through this to make sure we cover a thorough investigation," Ford said.

Ford said all parties involved are in custody or in the hospital and interviews with the parties will be crucial to determining what happened inside the home.

"You constantly hear guns, automatic gunshots going off at this house," said a neighbor who asked not to be identified. "Three or four times a week. You know they got something going on over there. Not sure what happened to cause this today."Â
