JSO: Military device found at home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The bomb squad was called to a home on Oldfield Trail in the Julington Creek area of Mandarin on Tuesday because of a possible military device.

The device was found by the homeowner among a large quantity of items purchased at an auction. The homeowner immediately called police, who evacuated surrounding homes and sent the bomb squad in to investigate.

"If it's a live piece of ordnance, it would be explosive, but there's no way to tell that by looking at it from the outside," JSO spokesman Christian Hancock said. "They're not going to take any chances with it going off accidentally."

The bomb squad rendered the device safe in the homeowner's backyard. No one was injured.

Any time someone finds a device they're unsure about, they should call police, who can alert the bomb squad if necessary, Hancock said.
