Judge denies state's motion to lessen killer's sentence

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Duval County judge on Thursday denied the state attorney's request to resentence a man serving life in prison for killing a man in 1988.

Curtis Cross killed Kew Chin in an attempted restaurant robbery.

Chin's family owned the Asian restaurant. Attorneys said Chin was shot in front of his wife, who dragged him to the car. He died on the way to a hospital.

In Thursday's hearing, the state attorney's office wanted Cross to be resentenced for his help in solving several crimes, including murders, thanks to his role as a law library clerk in prison.

Judge Kevin Blazs denied the motion, stating the record does not support "substantial assistance" that contributed to the convictions of other felons.

Two of Chin's children, who are now grown, were in the courtroom for Thursday's hearing.
