Kitchen fire closes Southside McDonald's

JFRD: No one hurt

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The McDonald's restaurant on Philips Highway across from the Avenues Mall is closed Tuesday after a fire broke out in the kitchen around 3 a.m.

Firefighters said the flames started at the French fry machine and was contained to a small area in the kitchen.

"The employees, after closing noticed one of the French fry fryers was a little overheated, so they turned the fryer off. A few minutes later they walked past the fryer and it burst into flames," said Sean Hatchett with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

Hatchett said there were only employees inside when the fire broke out, but everyone got out safely and no one was hurt.

The state fire marshal is trying to figure out what caused the fry cooker to catch fire.

There's no word on how much damage was done or when the restaurant would reopen.
