Lake City police officer terminated after internal-affairs investigation

Stacy Brownfield investigated after DUI charge

LAKE CITY, Fla. – A Lake City Police Department officer has been terminated after an internal-affairs investigation involving a DUI charge revealed that she violated department policy.

According to an LCPD press release, Officer Stacy Brownfield was off duty and in her personally owned car on Nov. 12, 2013, when she got into a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Southeast Country Club Road and Southeast Buck Glenn.

Columbia County deputies called for Florida Highway Patrol to investigate after suspecting that alcohol impairment was involved in the crash. After conducting field sobriety exercises, troopers arrested Brownfield for driving under the influence and took her to the Columbia County Jail, where she provided two breath samples and was formally charged with DUI.

Criminal proceedings are ongoing, but an internal-affairs investigation, conducted by the Lake City Police Department Office of Professional Standards, revealed that Brownfield violated policy. She was terminated by Chief Argatha Gilmore on Monday.

"This is an unfortunate reminder that we are not above the law," Gilmore said. "This officer was found to have violated our department police by driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. While I am grateful that there were no serious injuries in this crash, we have a firm stance against impaired driving in Lake City, and our officers must set the example."
