Lion cubs enjoy first full public day at Jax Zoo

Cubs given clean bill of health after a fractured leg healed

Jacksonville, Florida – It's been a full 24 hours and three African lion cubs are said to be doing well after greeting the public New Year's Eve at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.

The two males and one female were born Sept. 10, 2014, and were originally scheduled to make their public debut earlier.

However, as the cubs were playing underneath their mother, Tamu, she accidentally stepped on a male cub's leg, causing a break.

The cubs have been behind the scenes with reduced stimulation to allow the leg to heal.

The Jacksonville Zoo's animal health and care team feel his recovery has been impressive, and a radiograph two weeks ago showed the fracture has healed very well.

The team has not noticed any lameness of the leg.

The cubs were said to have been extremely curious and anxious to explore their exhibit.

Guests had the opportunity to see them first during the Zoo's Noon Year's Eve event Wednesday afternoon (12/31/14), in partnership with Jax4kids.
