Local firefighters help with western wildfires

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A group of local Florida Forest Service firefighters are back in town after helping crews battle the wildfires that continue to rage across California.

About 20 forest service members spent 19 days at Fort Complex in Hayfork, California, using tools like chainsaws, shovels and hoes to cut fire lines in order to slow the fire's progression.

Noah Wyatt, one of the firefighters that helped, said the work was intense, but it was well worth helping people in the area.

"We were out there, like I said, 19 days, and it was really worth it," Wyatt said.

Officials said that while in Hayfork, the firefighters from Jacksonville battled more than 40 individual fires that burned over 35,000.
