Authorities cleared the water in New Smyrna Beach Wednesday afternoon after two surfers were apparently bitten by sharks.

Volusia County Beach Patrol reports that a teenage boy and a young girl suffered bites within five minutes of each other. They were both surfing in waist-deep water in the same area, but they weren't together.

Beach Patrol says the boy was taken by personal vehicle to a nearby hospital with cuts on his calf. The girl was taken by ambulance with a bite to the ankle.

The victims described the shark as 4 to 5 feet long. Beach patrol officials said it's highly unlikely it was the same shark. They said they believe it was a group of sharks in the area feeding on fish.

Beach Patrol closed the water about half a mile south of the jetty in New Smyrna Beach for about 30 minutes while they investigated.
