Local shelter unveils new X-ray machine

New equipment saves employees, animals extra roadtrip

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services unveiled a new X-ray machine at a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday night.

The JED Fund, a nonprofit organization, along with local donors held a 30-day fundraising campaign to help the animal shelter raise $64,000 for the machine.

The founder of the JED Fund, Dione Garnand, said the new equipment at the facility will make it much easier for animal treatments. Before receiving the new X-ray machine, employees had to transport sick or injured animals to partner facilities in order for them to be scanned.

"It relieves the stress of having the animals go to another facility for an X-ray and coming back," said Garnand. "The time it takes for animal control officers to transport them back and forth, it's just huge for us."

The shelter is a no-kill facility with open admission. It takes in strays, cruelty cases and owner surrenders, then puts the animals up for adoption. Employees said the shelter is always looking for volunteers and foster parents along with food donations and supplies.

"We need food for the dogs and cats...right now we have a great need for collars and leashes for all of the adoptable dogs," said Garnand. "It's an ever-growing list we always need something."
