1 dead, 2 injured in Sunday night crash

FHP: Alcohol may have been a factor, charges pending

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man is dead and a woman is in serious condition after a crash Sunday night in Jacksonville.

A black Honda SUV was traveling northbound in the outside travel lane on Interstate 295 around 9:45 p.m. according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The SUV was being driven by 17-year-old Elizabeth Smith.

A black Chrysler van was disabled on the northbound outside emergency lane. Joseph Grant, 88, and Joan Jones, 76, both of St. Augustine, were in the van.

A gold Chrysler van was stopped behind the black van assisting with the disabled vehicle, according to FHP.

The black Honda SUV struck the left side of the gold Chrysler, causing it to collide with the black Chrysler van.

Both vehicles traveled onto the grass shoulder. The gold Chrysler struck a tree with its front end.

Grant died from injuries related to the crash. FHP said he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Jones was seriously injured and transported to UF Health in Jacksonville. FHP said she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Smith was transported to Baptist South Hopsital with minor injuries.
FHP said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash and charges are pending.
