JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman passenger in a Ford Explorer was killed and the driver was seriously injured when their SUV tried to avoid crashing into a vehicle stopped in the center lane of Interstate 95 near the Duval-Nassau county line late Monday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say Jose Cuevas, 34, and Merarie Cuevas, 25, both of Dade City, Fla., were headed north just after 11 p.m. when they came upon a vehicle stopped sideways in the interstate. The FHP report says the SUV swerved to avoid hitting the vehicle, left the highway and struck a tree.

Both were taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, where Merarie Cuevas died.
Troopers say the vehicle that had been stopped on the highway turned north and drove away.
