16-year-old runaway dies after Camden County chase, crash

Driver remains hospitalized, faces several charges

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. – A 16-year-old girl reported missing from Sanford, Fla., became the second passenger to die after Wednesday's car crash that ended a police pursuit on U.S. 17 just north of Kingsland, Ga.

According to the Camden County Sheriff's Office, Kyrsten Veil died Friday at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, where the car's driver, 19-year-old Jamal Jones, remains hospitalized in serious condition. David Sessions, 24, also of Sanford, died at the scene. (Pictured are Jones, left, and Sessions, right.)

The Sheriff's Office, Kingsland Police Department and Georgia State Patrol were chasing the Dodge Charger after it sped from an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 95 about 2 p.m. Wednesday. The car exited the interstate and sped east, swerving in an apparent attempt to hit officers, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said Jones continued on U.S. 17 through downtown Kingsland at a high speed, where a Georgia State Patrol officer joined the pursuit. Near the intersection of Daisy Avenue, the trooper used the bumper of his car to end the pursuit, sending the car off the road and into a tree. The Charger was literally cut in two by the force of the impact.

No law enforcement personnel were injured.

Jones is currently charged with aggravated assault, felony fleeing and attempting to elude, aggressive driving, reckless driving and a window tint violation. Additional charges are pending.
